Entrevista – Interview: nether

nether es una banda de Black Metal crudo y melódico de Bélgica fundada en 2019. Esta formación es una colección de músicos con raíces en la escena local del Black Metal durante décadas. Este año han publicado su primer disco “Between Shades And Shadows” a través de Art Gates Records. Hemos charlado con J (voz, bajo y principal compositor).

Algoderock: nether se formó el año pasado. ¿Cuál fue el punto de partida para que ustedes cuatro unieran sus fuerzas?

nether: De hecho, nether se fundó a principios de 2019 y surgió de las cenizas de otras bandas. P y yo tocamos, durante varios años, casi una década, en la formación melódica de black metal Signs Of Darkness. K tocó en Necrosis una banda de black metal en la región donde vivíamos. Después de una búsqueda no tan larga, se descubrió que B unía fuerzas y creaba la nada en su forma tal como la conocemos ahora. Así que podéis ver que los cimientos de la banda son bastante fuertes, como las raíces de los árboles viejos en la portada de nuestro álbum debut “Between Shades And Shadows”.

Algoderock: Os clasifican en el death metal melódico. ¿Cuáles dirías que son tus influencias?

nether: Lo llamas death metal melódico, nosotros lo llamamos black metal melódico porque nuestras raíces son el black metal. Pero bueno, la gente nos dice que hay un toque de death metal en eso. No tenemos ningún problema en cómo la gente llama a nuestra música siempre que les guste y puedan encontrar el significado más profundo detrás de ella. Nuestras influencias son la escena del black metal escandinavo de los 90 (Dark Funeral, Dawn, Dissection …) pero también se pueden encontrar toques de black metal griego melódico (Rotting Christ). Mucha gente dice haber escuchado algunos de los primeros Belphegor, ¡eso es un honor sin duda!

Algoderock: En este disco tenéis la filosofía de las raíces profundas a nivel personal. ¿Cuál es el motivo de esa filosofía para el álbum?

nether: Durante décadas escribo letras que se basan en historias y eventos personales. Como principal compositor de letras de esta y de bandas anteriores, es más fácil construir un tema extraído de todos los días en vivo. Cada uno tiene su propia vida, sus propias raíces en la sociedad y como tal crea relaciones con las personas, entornos que pueden hacerte fuerte o, a veces, débil. ¡Tienes que estar seguro de ti mismo y mantenerte erguido!

Algoderock: Para este primer álbum habéis colaborado con Art Gates Records. ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia de trabajar con ellos?

nether: ¡Muy bien! Es un honor trabajar con estos chicos, la comunicación es rápida, el trabajo es más que confiable y ofrecen lo que busca una banda como nether. Más en detalle ofrecen una buena promoción mundial y en tiempos de pandemia eso es lo único en lo que podemos confiar en estos días ya que los shows en vivo no son posibles en este momento y es una lástima. Por eso trabajamos con varios vídeos para lanzar nuestra música. En el pasado trabajamos con los chicos de Cloud Music Typography y más recientemente con JS de Theudo. Pero hay más por venir.

Algoderock: ¿Cuánto tiempo estuvísteis trabajando en la creación de este álbum?

nether: Comenzamos a principios de 2019 como dije anteriormente. P y yo teníamos un marco de algunas canciones terminado pero fue con la introducción de K y B, la banda y el sonido de la banda se completó. Con los riffs devastadores de K y la batería exquisita de B, supimos instantáneamente que este era el partido que no daba el comienzo necesario.

Algoderock: El primer single que lanzasteis fue “To The Shore”. ¿Qué nos puedes decir sobre el tema elegido para ese vídeo?

nether: No del todo correcto. El primer sencillo que lanzamos como vídeo con letra fue la canción de apertura de nuestro álbum “The Hand Of The Unspoken”. El tema es sobre el hecho de que, como individuo, caminas principalmente solo en la sociedad, tienes que encontrar tu lugar. No todo el mundo te da el espacio necesario para hacerlo. Hay gente que quiere llevarte de la mano … El segundo sencillo fue “To The Shores”, filmado como videoclip. Para ello trabajamos con JS. A lo largo de la vida, caminas atrás en el tiempo, de regreso a tus raíces y a tu propia esencia personal que fue alimentada por un mar de eventos arrastrados a las orillas de la vida temprana. El tercer y último sencillo fue “The Blood Is Gone” una canción melódica muy equilibrada que encuentra en ella el hecho de que a veces, a nivel personal, perdemos toda la sangre, toda la esencia del vivir. ¡Pero mantente firme y aférrate a las raíces del árbol que creaste personalmente!

Algoderock: Debido a la situación de la pandemia, no habrá muchos planes de viaje. ¿Habéis pensado en hacer un concierto por streaming o incluso dar algún concierto con aforo reducido si tenéis la oportunidad?

nether: Recibimos muchas ofertas de giras gracias a los chicos de Art Gates Records, pero debido a la pandemia, nosotros y muchas otras bandas no somos capaces de tocar en vivo. Entonces tenemos que buscar alternativas. Los conciertos con aforo reducido están prohibidos en Bélgica en este momento, por lo que tenemos que posponer este tipo de shows en vivo. Estamos trabajando en algo mientras hablamos para darles a los fans una idea de la banda, pero hay que ser pacientes …

nether: ¡Gracias! Es un honor ser invitado a esta entrevista. Seguro que queremos tocar en tu país de origen, después de la pandemia estaremos por allí y te contaremos nuestra historia personal.

nether is a raw and melodic Black Metal band from Belgium founded in 2019. This line-up is a collection of musicians with roots in the local Black Metal scene for decades. This year they released their first album “Between Shades And Shadows” through Art Gates Records. We chatted with J (vocals, bass and main composer).

Algoderock: Nether was formed last year. What was the starting point for the four of you to join forces?

nether: Indeed nether was founded at the beginning of 2019 and came out of the ashes of other bands. P and I played, for several years almost a decade, in the melodic black metal formation, Signs Of Darkness. K played in Necrosis a black metal band in the big region where we lived. After a not so long search B was found to join in forces and create nether in its form as we know it now. So you can see that the fundaments of the band are quite strong as the roots of the old trees on the frontcover of our debutalbum Between Shades And Shadows.

Algoderock: You rank in melodic death metal. What could you say are your influences?

nether: You call it melodic death metal, we call it melodic black metal because our roots are black metal. But hey, people tell us there is a hint of death metal in it to. We do not have a problem what people call our music as long as they like it and can find the deeper meaning behind it. Our influences are the ‘90’s Scandinavian black metal scene (Dark Funeral, Dawn, Dissection…) but also hints of melodic Greek black metal (Rotting Christ) can be found. Lots of people claim to hear some early Belphegor, that’s an honour for sure!

Algoderock: In this album you have the philosophy of deep roots on a personal level. What is the reason for that philosophy for the album?

nether: For decades I write lyrics that are build on personal stories and events. As the main lyric writer in this and previous bands it’s more easy to construct a theme distillated from every day live. Everyone has his own live, his own roots in society and as such creates relationships with people, surroundings that can make you strong or sometimes weak. You have to be sure of yourself and stand tall!

Algoderock: For this first album you have collaborated with Art Gates Records. How has been the experience of working with them?

nether: Very good! It’s an honour to work with these guys, the communication is fast, the work is more then reliable and they offer what a band like nether searches for. More in detail they offer a good and worldwide promotion and in times of a pandemic that’s the only thing we can rely on these days. As live shows are not possible right now and that’s a pity. That’s why we worked with several video’s to launch our music. In the past we worked with the guys in Cloud Music Typography and more recently with JS of Theudo. But there’s more to come.

Algoderock: How long have you been working on the creation of this album?

nether: We started in the beginning of 2019 as I stated earlier. P and I had a framework of some songs finished but it was with the introduction of K and B, the band and the bandsound was completed. With K’s shredding riffs and B’s exquisit drumming we instantly new that this was the match that gave nether the start needed.

Algoderock: The first single you released was To The Shore. What can you tell us about the theme chosen for that video?

nether: Not totally correct. The first single we released as a lyric video was the openingssong of our album, The Hand Of The Unspoken. The theme there is about the fact that as an individual you mostly walk alone in society, you have to find your place. Not everyone gives you the needed space to do so. There are people who want to lead you by hand …

The second single was To The Shores, shot as a video-clip. For this we worked with JS. Throughout live you walk back in time, back to your roots and to your own personal essence that was fed by a sea of events washed on the shores of early live. The third and final single was The Blood Is Gone. A well balanced melodic blackmetal song that finds in it the fact that we sometimes, on a personal level, loose all the blood, all the essence of living. But stand strong and hold on to the roots of the tree you personally created!

Algoderock: Due the pandemic situation there will not be many tour plans. Have you thought about doing a concert by streaming or are you going to give some concert with reduced capacity if you have the opportunity?

nether: We recieved a lot of tour offers through the hulp of the guys in Art Gates records but due to the pandemic we and also lots of other bands are not capable of playing live. So we have to search for alternatives. Concerts with reduced capacity are prohibited in Belgium at the moment of writing so we have to postpone this kind of liveshows. We are working on something as we speak, to give the fans an insight in the band but be patient…
