English:
So far are the golden days of Ska / Punk Pop when bands like Sublime, No Doubt, The Mighty Mighty Bostones, Reel Big Fish or our current protagonists Goldfinger played 24/7 on networks like MTV or Much Music and were the main attractions of festivals such as the Warped Tour, but the truth is that it is appreciated that several of them continue to make music and tour from time to time to recover those golden days that gave us so much joy at that time.
For their eighth album, the Californians Goldfinger return a little to their more classic roots of albums such as the mythical “Stompin Ground” and show us that in their own way they continue to have validity and relevance when it comes to making round and catchy songs for joy and enjoy your fans and the new ones who have joined over the last few years.
It must be said that Goldfinger’s current line-up is practically a “Dream Team” for those of us who know about this since apart from its mythical leader John Feldmann, the band is completed with Mike Herrera (John’s friend and leader of the mythical MxPx) on bass and backing vocals, Phil Sneed (whom we know from his story in Story Of The Year) on guitar and backing vocals Nick Gross on drums, setting up an authentic dream line-up for fans of this style and the aforementioned bands. Throughout its 12 songs we can find from a party start and jump with “Infinite” and “The City”, to a hit like “Wallflower” which is the best not only of the album but of Goldfinger’s career to a precious half time like “California On My Mind” that invites you to the beaches of Santa Monica, San Diego or Newport to watch the sunset with a beer and some rich smoke accompanied by a flirt or by colleagues in the middle of a bonfire and meet to perfection that exercise of nostalgia towards the Californian state where John comes from and who looks like a little sister from “Tijuana Sunrise” (song included in his previous album “The Knife” of 2017).
But we also have seasoned moments like “Nothing To Me”, ideal to get into the pogo and sing out loud every word of this great song, which again is one of the best of the album and can be a point in the live of the band when can present this new album.
We highlight Mike Herrera’s second vocals on “The Good Guy”, which looks like something out of any MxPx album and that can only be good, so fans of both bands have the perfect “crossover” on this track.
In general lines Goldfinger have returned through the big door and delivering an album that although it does not differ much from what is offered in other classic albums but this does not mean that it is one of the albums of the year within its style and if it serves to capture Welcome to the new generations, I think we can’t ask for anything more or less than a round album and this “Never Look Back” is a lot.
