It was the year 1996 when, from the bowels of Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray and Helloween, a German group from Hamburg was born called Iron Savior. Since then have rained, 12 albums, some line-up changes, but what remains perennial is its incombustible leader, producer, singer and guitarist Piet Sielck.
Last year they also released an album, “Kill or Get Killed”, but since the good old Piet already had written material, he has not made us wait much longer, on December 4, the date coinciding with Jan-Sören Eckert‘s birthday (bassist for the band who recently overcame cancer), “Skycrest” is released on AFM Records. The cover has been the work of the Colombian Felipe Machado Franco (Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Lords Of Black, Power Quest, etc.)
The beginning with the brand’s intro, “The Guardian”, already makes your hair stand on end, and the homonymous “Skycrest” strikes you down with galloping power metal, pounding riffs, catchy choruses, a great song! Well, here are the shots, mostly they remind you of Gamma Ray, and Blind Guardian, especially for the choruses, for example, as in “Our Time Has Come” and “There Can Be Only One”, songs with a style between power metal and the most classic hard & heavy, or in “Hellbreaker” and “Welcome To The New World”, with a certain atmosphere, rhythm changes and use of synthesizers, or in the devastating and speeding “Silver Bullet”, and also on the melodic and catchy “End Of The Rainbow”.
Then there are several more themes to highlight, and even some that will become an authentic anthem, in the case of “Souleater”, bass and drums burst into force in a great song of pure Teutonic heavy metal ideal to enjoy live. Like “Raise The Flag”, this is an intense halftime, very Accept style, which also points to classic.
For the end we have two wonders, “Ease Your Pain”, a super emotional semi-acoustic ballad sung by bassist Jan-Sören Eckert, who once overcome cancer, and as the title says, and closing the album, “Ode To The Brave”, another great power metal song that contains some guitar picks that will leave your eardrums trembling.
The same sin of daring, but this is the best album of Iron Savior, and that they have records of remarkable high, but this “Skycrest” is heavy, melodic, direct, catchy and the most guitarist of all, and of course we must highlight the immense work of Piet Sielck, not only on guitar and vocals, but also in production work, outstanding.
