Reseña – Review: Xeno «Sojourn»

Hoy nos toca hablar del grupo Xeno y su ultimo lanzamiento”Sojourn”, y es que este grupo holandés desde que sacó su primer y más que notable trabajo ”Atlas construcd”, han pasado 4 años con  cambios de formación y una pandemia de por medio. ¿Y qué vamos a encontrar?, pues para mi un  DISCAZO que cada vez que lo escucho me gusta más y más. Y es que este grupo que yo definiría  como metal progresivo ambiental (lo de ambiental porque desarrollan en sus temas pasajes  ambientales alternando con riffs poderosos que son una delicia) despliega una calidad instrumental  brutal, y me siento osado al dar esta definición porque puedes encontrar desde detalles groove hasta  ramalazos de rock de los 70, con lo que mi conclusión es que son Xeno y solo suenan a ellos.

El disco comienza con la intro “Revery” donde el piano se adueña de la misma con una entrada  tardía del resto de instrumentos que te recrea un ambiente atmosférico de relax. “In stasis” continúa  con ese rollo ambiental que hasta definiría como chill out donde el piano está soberbio y la voz  melodiosa como no queriendo hacer sombra a los instrumentos para acabar con voz gutural que le  da un buen contrapunto.

El tema “Dusk” tiene un rollo de guitarra oriental, con la utilización de voz gutural y melodiosa que me recuerda a Crematory o a sus paisanos After Forever en el uso de las  voces. “ Epiphany” continúa la dinámica del tema anterior con un trabajo de piano soberbio. A  continuación el tema “Exile” tenemos una canción donde están de protagonistas la voz gutural y las  guitarras, con el piano dando las pausas en ese rollito atmosférico que acompaña a todo el disco.

“Nomad” es el tema mas trallero del disco con unas guitarras atronadoras y la voz gutural soberbia,  temazo para no dejar de mover la cabeza. “Memories” es una pequeña intro de sonido ambiental  con esa voz susurrante aterciopelada de Edwin para dar paso a “Closure” con ese sonido de teclado años 70 y otro tema para mi gusto muy bien hilado, con un buen trabajo vocal. “Resurge” me  parece un tema brutal con una batería espídica y potente que me recuerda a los inicios de Crematory o Machine Head. “Uncarged” es un tema que sigue la tónica de las primeras canciones del disco. Para  finalizar tenemos el tema “Sojourn” que da titulo al disco, un temazo de 13:15 segundos donde la  banda al completo despliega todo su arte y donde les queda un tema redondo donde se lucen por  igual músicos y vocalistas.

¿Qué es lo que vamos a encontrar en este disco?, un disco con una calidad instrumental brutal y un  sonido propio imposible de calificar.

¿Qué peros se le puede poner a este disco?, para mi gusto es un disco que puede no entrar a la primera pero que con las sucesivas escuchas, vas notando la riqueza de los distintos matices de sus temas y te acaba encantando. Y otro pero es que en determinados temas la voz melodiosa de Edwin se ahoga en la base instrumental con lo que no podemos apreciar su trabajo vocal porque los instrumentos los engullen. Matizando estos peros de mi opinión por supuesto personal, solo puedo decir una cosa de  este discazo: “Aaabbbaaattthhh”.

Today we have to talk about the Xeno group and its latest release «Sojourn», and it is that this Dutch group since it released its first and more than remarkable work «Atlas construcd», 4 years have passed with line-up changes and a pandemic in between . And what are we going to find? Well, for me a DISC that every time I listen to it I like it more and more. And it is that this group that I would define as environmental progressive metal (the environmental thing because they develop environmental passages in their songs alternating with powerful riffs that are a delight) displays a brutal instrumental quality, and I feel daring to give this definition because you can find from details groove to streaks of rock from the 70s, so my conclusion is that they are Xeno and only sound like them.

The album begins with the intro «Revery» where the piano takes over it with a late entry of the rest of the instruments that recreates an atmospheric atmosphere of relaxation. “In stasis” continues with that ambient roll that I would even define as chill out where the piano is superb and the melodious voice as not wanting to overshadow the instruments to end up with a guttural voice that gives it a good counterpoint.

The song “Dusk” has an oriental guitar roll, with the use of a guttural and melodious voice that reminds me of Crematory or its fellow countrymen After Forever in the use of voices. «Epiphany» continues the dynamics of the previous song with a superb piano work. Next on the song «Exile» we have a song where the guttural voice and guitars are the protagonists, with the piano giving pauses in that atmospheric roll that accompanies the whole album.

«Nomad» is the loudest song on the album with thunderous guitars and a superb guttural voice, a great song to keep shaking your head. “Memories” is a little ambient sound intro with Edwin’s velvety whispering voice to give way to “Closure” with that 70’s keyboard sound and another theme for my taste very well spun, with good vocal work. «Resurge» seems to me a brutal song with a spicy and powerful battery that reminds me of the beginnings of Crematory or Machine Head. «Uncarged» is a theme that follows the tonic of the first songs on the album. To finish we have the song «Sojourn» that gives the album its title, a 13:15-second great song where the entire band displays all their art and where they have a round theme where musicians and vocalists alike shine.

What are we going to find on this album? An album with a brutal instrumental quality and its own sound impossible to qualify.

What buts can you put on this album? For my taste, it is an album that may not enter the first time but with successive listens, you notice the richness of the different nuances of its songs and you end up enchanted. And another but is that in certain songs Edwin’s melodious voice is drowned in the instrumental base with which we cannot appreciate his vocal work because the instruments engulf them. Qualifying these buts from my personal opinion of course, I can only say one thing about this great album: “Aaabbbaaattthhh”.
