Reseña Väldhemar – “Straight To Hell”

El 6 de octubre de 2020 Vhäldemar lanzará su sexto álbum “Straight To Hell” a través de Fighter Records. La producción ha tenido lugar en Chromaticity Studios de Asua (Vizcaya), propiedad del guitarrista de la banda y productor Pedro J. Monge, y la portada ha sido creada por el finlandés Jan ‘Örkki’ Yrlund de Darkgrove studios (Manowar, Battle Beast, Testament, etc.).

Vhäldemar es una banda española de Power Metal formada a finales de los 90 en Vizcaya por el guitarrista Pedro J. Monge y el cantante y guitarrista Carlos Escudero. Poco a poco se han ido labrando un hueco en la escena mejorando y evolucionando disco a disco, y en los dos últimos años han realizado 42 conciertos en países como Japón, Rusia, Holanda, Francia y España.

Después de algunos cambios en la formación para este nuevo trabajo presentan nuevas caras, Raúl Serrano al bajo, Jonkol Tera (Incursed, Orion Child) al teclado y Alejandro Camuñas ‘Jandro’ (Orion Child) a la batería.

Bueno pues play y al lío, primeros segundos de “Death To The Wizards!”, y tengo que decir que ya se me eriza la piel, ese riff afilado y melódico, esa base rítmica heavy y esa voz aguerrida de Carlos ya promete. Es como si juntaramos a Gamma Ray y a Manowar con teclados y da como resultado unos poderosos Vhäldemar en versión mejorada. Pero si el inicio es prometedor agarrarse que vienen curvas con “My Spirit”. ¡Vaya temazo! Cómo suena el bajo y la batería, contundentes a más no poder, la voz de Carlos Escudero llega a niveles estratosféricos (qué potencia, por favor), y a Pedro J. Monge se le queda pequeña la guitarra, menuda velocidad y melodía, tanto que la parte del solo se la cede al indonesio Gavin Iedema, que participa como invitado en este tema, y cumple con creces.

Ahora le toca el turno a “Afterlife”, y no bajan el pistón. Power Metal clásico, rápido y melódico, con cambios de ritmo y donde Jonkol Tera se luce con las teclas. Le sigue el tema que da título al disco, “Straight To Hell”, con un comienzo a lo Accept pero que Vhäldemar le da su sello propio. Se trata de una canción con mucha garra, directa, donde las melodías de la guitarra y ese estribillo épico combinan a la perfección.

Esto va rápido, y es que sin darme cuenta, ya voy por la mitad del disco, “Damnation’s Here” es otro trallazo de Power Metal que no da respiro. Riffs afilados, bajo y batería a velocidad de vértigo, el solo de teclado y guitarra te dejan extenuado, y la incansable voz de Carlos no tiene límites, se deja las cuerdas vocales.

Turno para “Fear” y noto un corte un tanto oscuro y más pesado, potente y heavy, riffs que me recuerdan a Judas Priest, y hay sorpresas, una de ellas es la voz aguda que acompaña a Carlos que es la del bajista Raúl Serrano, y que también ha compuesto este tema. La otra sorpresa es la colaboración del guitarrista, y paisano del grupo, Dann Hoyos (Rise To Fall, The Space Octopus) que realiza un solo espectacular.

La siguiente, “Hell Is On Fire” tiene un rollo más hardrockero o hard & heavy melódico, lo que no cambia es el magnífico trabajo de producción que tiene este disco, todo suena perfectamente ensamblado y la guitarra te martillea de una forma que no puedes parar de seguir el ritmo. Un tema ideal para el directo.

En “Black Mamba” me pasa que creo que me ha saltado a un disco de Primal Fear o de Firewind, pero no, toda esa potencia con afinaciones más graves de guitarra, la atronadora batería y la voz de Carlos Escudero hacen que sea un puro y auténtico latigazo de Vhäldemar.

No me lo creo, llega un poco de pausa con “When It’s All Over”, la balada del disco, sí, pero roza el medio tiempo, tiene gancho, es intensa, al igual que el solo de guitarra, hay partes que Carlos canta como Chris Boltendahl de Grave Digger (voy a ser malvado, por un momento me imagino a Escudero al frente del grupo teutón…).

Qué pena porque llega la última, “Old King’s Visions (Pt. VI)”, como es tradición, sexto disco y continúa la saga con otra parte más, ésta me resulta más épica, pero Vhäldemar lo hace como en todo el disco, con Power y Heavy Metal a piñón.

Sigo a Vhäldemar desde el principio de su carrera, reconozco que es una de mis bandas preferidas y “I Made My Own Hell” del 2003 mi disco favorito (hasta ahora), el último “Against All Kings” del 2017 me encantó, pero este “Straight To Hell” me parece el mejor disco de todos y un bombazo. Desde que empieza hasta que termina, sin concesiones, potente, melódico y con la mejor producción que puedas imaginar.

Vhäldemar is a Spanish Power Metal band formed in the late 90’s in Vizcaya by guitarist Pedro J. Monge and singer and guitarist Carlos Escudero. Little by little they have been carving out a niche on the scene, improving and evolving album by album, and in the last two years they have performed 42 concerts in countries such as Japan, Russia, Holland, France and Spain.

After some changes in the line-up for this new album they present new faces, Raúl Serrano on bass, Jonkol Tera (Incursed, Orion Child) on keyboard and Alejandro Camuñas ‘Jandro’ (Orion Child) on drums.

Well then, play and go to hell, first seconds of “Death To The Wizards!”, And I have to say that my skin is crawling, that sharp and melodic riff, that heavy rhythmic base and that brave voice of Carlos already promises. It is as if we put Gamma Ray and Manowar together with keyboards and it results in powerful Vhäldemar in an improved version. But if the beginning

is promising to hold on, curves are coming with “My Spirit”. What a great song! How the bass and drums sound, strong to the point, Carlos Escudero’s voice reaches stratospheric levels (what power, please), and Pedro J. Monge’s guitar is too small, such speed and melody, so much so that the part of the solo is given to the Indonesian Gavin Iedema, who participates as a guest on this issue, and fully complies.

Now it’s the turn of “Afterlife”, and they don’t lower the piston. Classic, fast and melodic Power Metal, with rhythm changes and where Jonkol Tera excels with the keys. It is followed by the title track, “Straight To Hell”, with an Accept-like beginning but Vhäldemar gives it his own stamp. It is a song with a lot of punch, direct, where the melodies of the guitar and that epic chorus combine perfectly.

This is going fast, and without realizing it, I’m already halfway through the album, “Damnation’s Here” is another Power Metal whiplash that doesn’t take a breath. Sharp riffs, bass and drums at breakneck speed, the keyboard and guitar solo leave you exhausted, and Carlos’s tireless voice has no limits, it leaves the vocal cords.

I turn to “Fear” and I notice a somewhat dark and heavier, powerful and heavy cut, riffs that remind me of Judas Priest, and there are surprises, one of them is the high-pitched voice that accompanies Carlos, which is that of the bassist Raúl Serrano, and who has also composed this song. The other surprise is the collaboration of the guitarist, and fellow countryman of the group, Dann Hoyos (Rise To Fall, The Space Octopus) who performs a spectacular solo.

The next one, “Hell Is On Fire” has a more hard-rock or hard & heavy melodic vibe, what doesn’t change is the magnificent production work this album has, everything sounds perfectly assembled and the guitar hits you in a way that you can’t stop following the rhythm. An ideal subject for the direct.

In “Black Mamba” it happens to me that I think I have jumped to a Primal Fear or Firewind album, but no, all that power with lower guitar tunings, the thunderous drums and the voice of Carlos Escudero make it a pure and authentic whiplash from Vhäldemar.

I don’t believe it, there is a bit of a pause with “When It’s All Over”, the ballad on the album, yes, but it touches half time, it has a hook, it is intense, like the guitar solo, there are parts that Carlos sings as Chris Boltendahl from Grave Digger (I’m going to be evil, for a moment I imagine Escudero leading the Teutonic group…).

What a shame because the last one comes, “Old King’s Visions (Pt. VI)”, as is tradition, sixth album and the saga continues with another part, this one is more epic, but Vhäldemar does it as in the whole album, with Power and Heavy Metal style.

I follow Vhäldemar since the beginning of his career, I recognize that he is one of my favorite bands and “I Made My Own Hell” from 2003 my favorite album (so far), the last “Against All Kings” from 2017 I loved it, but this one “Straight To Hell” seems to me the best album of all and a bombshell. From start to finish, uncompromising, powerful, melodic and with the best production you can imagine.
