Reseña – Review: Yungblud «Weird!»

[English below]

, vamos a comprobarlo.

I remember when three years ago I ran into a guy on the internet who was supposed to do a thing between pop rock, indie, alternative and his theme was «Anarchist» and I thought … Wow this kid is something strange because he mixes many styles but I don’t see it inside any one in particular. Well that boy was Dominic Richard Harrison, or Yungblud as he is known all over the world.

Since then I have been following in his footsteps and after a great self-titled EP, things started to go up at full speed and without brake for this peculiar British young man, but the truth is that with his debut «21 Century Liability», it was hard for me to see all the potential that I did perceive in the first Ep that Dom released, although it had and still has tracks that are very enjoyable for the general public.

Then would come his explosion thanks to the Hit written in gold «11 Minutes» with the beautiful and very talented Halsey and the drummer of Blink-182, Travis Barker, who just put him in the center of all eyes and now came his time , explode with the worldwide release of «Weird!», his second album after the EP «The Underrated Youth» released last year.

Well, today, December 4, Yungblud launches «Weird!» And the question is, is it worth so much hype for the album? Does Dom live up to the expectations placed on it? , let’s check it out.

In Dom’s own words, this is an album to find and feel good about oneself, being «weird» is not a bad thing, but something to celebrate because we are not all the same and diversity is the best aspect of oneself, not being just like the one next door.

The album opens with «Teresa», a cut somewhat calmer than what he usually offers and where he puts a touch of serenity and adds just the right touch of contained but intense emotion without the need to show his more aggressive side. he paints the theme of arenas or pavilions full of people chanting his songs.

Much more playful and sexy is «Cotton Candy», where Yungblud makes the perfect alternative pop song and ideal for a carefree and unattached sex with the ideal person, I think if that was the idea for the song .. the guy has it nailed.

Although we only have two tracks, I think that you can clearly see Dom’s intention to expand his sound and his musical horizons and not stay in a sound so convoluted and overloaded, which was one of the weak points of the previous album.

For «Strawberry Lipstick», he takes us to an LGTB punk club or a smoky basement where everyone unleashes their sexual freedom while he puts on the perfect song for it and that is that duality that Dom presents (inherited from people like Bowie, T. Rex, Prince) is one of the strong and attractive points of his music, he plays distraction all the time and you don’t know if he talks about a boy and a girl, two boys, two girls, who knows … AND the truth matters little as long as we all respect each other.

«Mars» is a very delicate cut and inspired by the story of a young trans man who gets the acceptance of his parents after attending a Yungblud show and showing them that you don’t have to point people to their sexual orientation, but rather help them to find your own identity, the song is very, very beautiful and surely many people feel identified with the lyrics and the story behind it.

But after the «calm», the madness returns and is that «Superdeadfriends» is a frenzied cannon where Yungblud combines pop, rock, indie and hip hop, as if you were mixing Gorillaz, Beastie Boys and The Used, and the result is electrifying and very funny and we are left with the message that he emits to his fans («The Broken Hearts Club»): «We do not care if you are White, Black, Asian or intertwined sexuality», everyone is welcome to the universe of Yungblud.

On the contrary, «Love Song» is an open letter and shows us perhaps the most sensitive side of Dom where he shows all his support to those who need it, it makes the hair stand on end to hear him sing phrases like «Nobody Told Me How I Love Myself «And it is that sometimes we are the ones who have to meet on the road and although it is difficult to get ahead being ourselves and faithful to what we believe, I think Dom expresses it perfectly in this cut sense.

We can highlight the duet with Machine Gun Kelly in the alternative pop punk «Acting Like That» or the energetic «God Save Me, But Don’t Drown Me Out», that nod to My Chemical Romance (it was Black Parade) in «Ice Cream Man «who looks like a cousin sister to» Teenagers «and shows us Dom’s passion for glam rock and excess makeup and lipstick, is a kind of anti-everything teen anthem and to unleash your rage and restrained sexuality.

In general, Yungblud shows us in «Werid!» a much clearer and more coherent speech than in his previous work, without overusing the production layers and delivering more specific songs and at certain times easier to digest but without losing that personal touch that he has and that differentiates him from others Trendy male artists like The Weeknd or Sam Smith’s bland, although they are not the same musical style as Dom, they are within the mainstream bubble just like him.

We do not know what he will surprise us with in his next work, but as regards this one in particular, Yungblud has overcome and far exceeded the pressure of «surpassing the debut album» by delivering a very interesting collection of songs that will surely delight his fans and those who have not yet approached the world of this peculiar mainstream artist but without losing sight of his more alternative and extravagant influences.
