Reseña (Review) – Machine Gun Kelly «Tickets To My Downfall»

[English below]

The musician from Cleveland (Ohio), Machine Gun Kelly is one of the most important contemporary hip hop artists of recent years with records like «Lace Up» or his album of last year 2019 «Hotel Diablo», endorse him as one of the most important names of recent times, so when he said that for his fifth album he would immerse himself in the world of pop punk and rock, we did not know if he was only talking about one song since he is an artist basically of rap and hip hop.

Well, our surprise was capitalized when we listened to «My Bloody Valentine» (in whose videoclip the famous Megan Fox, actress and partner of the American musician collaborates), a song that could well have been signed by bands like Good Charlotte or even the Blink 182 of the album «California» and we began to wonder if MGK (acronym by which the musician is known) would be able to write an entire album of pop punk and rock and how it would sound in this field until then unpublished for him.

Well today September 25 Machine Gun Kelly has released his fifth album «Tickets To My Downfall» and the result is surprisingly good and remarkable.

The album begins with «Tickets To My Downfall», the song that gives the album its title and that begins slowly and with MGK reciting the first verses of the song to immediately explode into a brutal theme of pop punk wave Gob, Mest or Good Charlotte and curiously far from shocking us, the truth is that his voice fits perfectly with the rhythmic base, without a doubt a great beginning for the musician.

Just as catchy is «Kiss Kiss», perhaps with a certain alternative rock aftertaste and some guitars reminiscent of Biffy Clyro from the Puzzle era, making this song a delight for the listener who will connect with him from the first listen.

«Drunk Face» begins slower and with loops reminiscent of certain recent compositions by bands like All Time Low, but much better structured than those of the Baltimore group without a doubt. It’s impossible that the chorus does not stay in your head from the first second and you smile throughout the song.

The virtues of «My Bloody Valentine» were already mentioned, so we highlight the dance base that reminds of bands like The White Tie Affair or Danger Radio, and that sticks like gum on the sole of your shoe from the first listen and will be on your head for months and months.

We move on to one of the hits on the album such as «Forget Me Now», a duet by MGK and the beautiful Halsey, one of the most important pop artists in recent years and who is scared of this style and fits perfectly with MGK’s voice, the song and vocal play of both artists is simply spectacular.

The influence of Blink 182 is present in «All I Know», although perhaps more of Simple Creatures (Mark Hoppus’s group from Blink) but the result, although inferior to its predecessor, is quite pleasant to listen to and gives you that good vibes that sometimes it is necessary within a disc of this style.

We lowered the revolutions a little bit with «Lonley», perhaps it could be to this album what «Stay Together For The Kids» by Blink 182 was in their classic «Take Off Your Pants And Jackets», that ballad that gives the emotional touch within an album loaded with lively and sugary songs.

But far from lowering the MGK surprises with the fast «WWIII», a pill of punk pop wave 2000 of only 59 seconds that could have been signed by MxPx and with MGK singing more ripped and fierce than in other songs, just great.

Dispensable is the interlude «Kevin And Barracuda Interlude», but it is soon solved with the remarkable «Concert For Aliens», and it is incredible how the guy has managed to square his voice in a style that a priori had never sung and that the result is so well, at least one respect Machine Gun Kelly deserves for that and we give it to him.

Another duet takes over «My Ex’s Best Friend» and in this case with nothing more and nothing less than the genius of Blackbear, one of the most important current artists of rap and current R’N’B and again another target since It’s a super catchy song that the Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco from their last and regular works would already like for them, so if things are done small.

«Jawbreaker» more alternative but equally successful does not give you a respite that you will know the lyrics after the second listen, one of the best MGK songs to date without any doubt.

After «Nothing Inside» and the interlude «Banyan Tree Interlude», the album comes to an end with «Play This When I’m Gone», a much more heartfelt and slow song where the acoustic guitar takes center stage and MGK shows us his most personal and intimate side, notably closing one of the albums of 2020 and by far.

Well yes, the doubts are already cleared Machine Gun Kelly has fulfilled a very remarkable pop punk and rock album, loaded with songs, hook and especially fitting his voice to the style in a surprising and very successful way, so be a fan of the musician or you don’t know him much, we recommend you approach this new proposal by the North American artist because here is a record and of the good ones, everyone is warned.
