English:
Anthea is a symphonic and melodic metal band from Los Angeles formed in 2015 by keyboardist, and now also singer, Diego Valadez (Cellador) and drummer Peter Vasquez (Angel Siniestro). Then the guitarist Juan Pina (Angel Siniestro) and the bassist Constantin Lorenz joined, releasing their self-titled EP independently in 2017, and now, with the incorporation of a second guitarist, Marcos Mejia, also from Angel Siniestro, and a change of bassist, Eric Serrano, will release their debut album, “Illusion”, on October 23 through Rockshots Records.
All the music and lyrics have been composed and produced by Diego Valadez except the music for “The Expedition” by Marco Mejía. Mixed and mastered by Will Salazar (Revenant Sound Studios), and the cover art has been the work of Ricky Silva (Interfectum Studios).
The first impression just starting with “Reach” is the amazing resemblance they have to Nightwish, the same symphonic melodies and orchestral arrangements, which happens when having a duet of male voices, one more acute and theatrical, and another more aggressive death style. They give Anthea a different and original seal that avoids any imitation.
“Eclipse” has a faster rhythmic base, typical of Power Metal, which alternates dark with melodic parts and a good dose of keyboard, as if it were Children of Bodom or Wintersun.
“Moirai” has the collaboration of the Italian singer Chiara Tricarico (Moonlight Haze, Ravenword), and the song does resemble these bands and After Forever, Dark Sarah, Nightwish, etc., you know where I’m going, symphonic metal where the vocal beauty (Chiara-Diego) and the trident of melodies (guitars-keyboard) stand out.
The homonymous theme, “Illusion”, starts with a forceful rhythmic base, powerful riffs, different types of voices, the aggressive and rough Juan Pina and the melancholic and energetic Diego Valadez, who also has a good keyboard solo. A song to enjoy live.
The other collaboration, Eric Meyers, guitarist and partner of Diego Valadez on Cellador, appears on “The Light Divine”, a powerful and complex symphonic power theme in the vein of Kamelot, with changes of rhythms, spectacular guitar and keyboard solos, bordering on the progressive, in short, a great song.
Speed returns on “Discovery”, another symphonic Power Metal track, with a European cut, similar to Thunderstone or Nostradameus, with guttural voices and a good guitar and keyboard solo.
“The Expedition” has an air of Dimmu Borgir and Kamelot, it sounds powerful and heavy, like Diego’s voice that reminds me of Michael Seifert (Rebellion).
“Reflections” seemed that it was going to be the ballad of rigor, I say it seemed because it turns out that it is another melancholic, epic and powerful theme that starts with a delicate piano intro and a surprising change of vocal tessitura by Diego Valadez, it is like a mixture between Zak Stevens (Circle II Circle, Savatage) and Ville Laihiala (S-Tool, ex-Poisonblack, ex-Setenced), then gaining in intensity with a portentous change of pace, sharp riffs, keyboard solo, violin, and just smoothly with piano.
To finish, an instrumental closes the album, which is the orchestral version of the song “Moirai”, certifying the high compositional and symphonic quality practiced by these Californians.
Therefore, Anthea has been a great discovery and “Illusion” a pleasant surprise and a highly recommended album. It will remind you of countless bands, but what matters in the end is that they have that personal stamp that makes them particularly interesting.
