[Review] Crematory “Inglorious Darkness”

CREMATORY, EL ETERNO OLVIDADO

Corría el año 2004 cuando un servidor tuvo el beneplácito absoluto de asistir al festival Lorca Rock donde entre muchos grupos tuve la gratísima sorpresa de conocer a Crematory, grupo de Gothic Metal alemán con tintes Death y donde la mezcla de voz melódica con voz gutural me dejó simplemente anonadado. Dieciocho años después y varios cambios de alineación, la banda deja la influencia Death por rock industrial añoso con guitarras compactas y melodiosas, teclados más armónicos y épicos y manteniendo su sello de identidad en la voz (lo que he llegado a denominar los “pimpinela del metal”).

Dejando aparte mis recuerdos, nos embarcamos en el análisis de su último trabajo llamado “Inglorious Darkness” y que nos traen vía Napalm Records siendo su decimoséptimo trabajo (casi nada). El inicio del disco con el tema “Inglorious Darkness” es una declaración de intenciones sobre cuáles son los derroteros de este disco continuando con “Break Down the Wall” que contiene las mejores guitarras melódicas del disco. No puede faltar temas cantados en su lengua materna como “Trümmerwelten”, “Tranen der Zeit”, “Zur Holle” o “Das ende” recordando este último tema a Rammstein en sus comienzos. Los teclados adquieren un papel importantísimo en todos los temas siendo responsable del soporte rítmico gótico de varios temas con resultados simplemente sublimes, además es responsable de las introducciones de varios temas como ocurre con “Forsaken” con tintes épicos.

Definitivamente estamos ante uno de los mejores discos editados por la banda en estas últimas hornadas. Es de recibo decir que la evolución de la banda puede dejar descolocados a los metaleros que retuvieron en sus oídos los primeros discos, pero ha pasado la friolera de 20 años y las bandas buscan su evolución creativa. La única pega que puedo ponerle a este disco es el hecho de que Stass asuma ambas voces, hace que quede algo disonante entre voz limpia y gutural. Magnífico trabajo. Un saludo.

It was the year 2004 when a server had the absolute pleasure of attending the Lorca Rock festival where among many groups I had the pleasant surprise of meeting Crematory, a German Gothic Metal group with Death overtones and where the mixture of melodic voice with guttural voice left me simply stunned. Eighteen years later and several line-up changes, the band leaves the Death influence for old-fashioned industrial rock with compact and melodious guitars, more harmonic and epic keyboards and keeping its hallmark in the voice (what I have come to call the “pimpernel of the metal”).

Leaving aside my memories, we embark on the analysis of their latest work called “Inglorious Darkness” and that they bring us via Napalm Records, being their seventeenth work (almost nothing). The beginning of the album with the song “Inglorious Darkness” is a declaration of intent about the directions of this album, continuing with “Break Down the Wall” which contains the best melodic guitars on the album. You can not miss songs sung in their mother tongue such as “Trümmerwelten”, “Tranen der Zeit”, “Zur Holle” or “Das ende” recalling this last song to Rammstein in its beginnings. The keyboards take on a very important role in all the themes, being responsible for the gothic rhythmic support of several themes with simply sublime results, it is also responsible for the introductions of several themes, as occurs with “Forsaken” with epic overtones.

This is definitely one of the best albums released by the band in recent batches. It is acceptable to say that the evolution of the band can leave the metalheads who kept the first albums in their ears unsettled, but a whopping 20 years have passed and the bands are looking for their creative evolution. The only downside that I can put on this album is the fact that Stass assumes both voices, it leaves something dissonant between clean and guttural voice. Great job. All the best.
