Review: Powerwolf “Call Of The Wild”

Ora Pronobis profanos, Powerwolf está aquí. Corría el año 2019 cuando tuve el placer de ver a esta formación en el Rock Fest Barcelona proyectando un derroche de energía brutal de power metal teatralizado en un ambiente eclesiástico con hombres lobo como protagonistas; y donde Falk Maria Schlegel no paraba un segundo quieto y la voz de Attila me dejó totalmente anonadado y tengo que reconocer aunque me pese que este grupo era desconocido para mi y me quedé totalmente alucinado. Y es que este grupo tiene un sonido muy característico y suyo (como Sabaton) y te puede gustar o directamente odiarlo. ¿ A qué viene esta perorata?, pues que lanzaron su nuevo disco “Call of the Wild” vía Napalm Records el 16 de Julio.

El disco comienza con el tema “Faster than the Flame” con un cantos eclesiásticos con toques épicos para a continuación gritar el estribillo a pleno pulmón, temazo que en directo nos va a hacer desgañitarnos para gritar este himno. Seguimos con “Beast of Gevaudan” donde los coros eclesiásticos dan ese toque atmosférico a otro tema power brutal y donde el órgano sigue manteniendo ese ambiente teatralizado, primer single y videoclip del disco.

El siguiente tema “Dancing with the Dead” donde los coros se combinan de manera exquisita para darle ese punto de majestuosidad al tema que te obliga a gritar, me gustan las guitarras en este tema. “Varcolac” tenemos una canción donde el órgano está más presente y la batería adquiere protagonismo en la base rítmica y los tempos. “Alive or Undead” se inicia con un canto eclesiástico y el sonido de una campana para dar apertura a la balada del disco donde Attila y Falk van de la mano al comienzo del tema, me gusta mucho el estribillo y la teatralización del tema con los coros.

“Blood for Blood (Faoladh)” es un tema donde el teclado en sonido de gaita nos sumerge en una canción épica con toques happy que te imaginas cantando en una taberna cerveza en mano. “Glaubenskraft” tema con coros solemnes que arrancan gritando el estribillo a pleno pulmón, vuelven esos coros eclesiásticos de fondo, tema donde el órgano es el protagonista. “Call of the Wild” se tercia como un tema más fluido y directo, sin pausas corales ni orquestales, Power Old School. “Sermons of Swords” otro tema power marca de la casa donde los coros gritan el estribillo y no deja respiro. “Undress to Confess” tenemos un tema donde los teclados menos sobrecargados llevan el hilo del tema y donde la alternancia vocal de Attila con el coro queda muy chula. “Reverent of Rats” buen tema para finalizar el disco y donde me gusta la dupla guitarra teclados.

Definitivamente estamos ante otro buen disco de Powerwolf, cabe destacar la calidad compositiva y la tremenda virtud de combinar elementos corales y orquestales sin resultar un disco sobrecargado en ningún momento. Es verdad que es un grupo que tiene un sonido ÚNICO con lo que ello conlleva, o te gustan o puedes encontrar gente que digan que suena siempre a lo mismo. Para mí es una formación que me encanta y los que no lo tengan claro que los vean en directo. Un saludo.

It was the year 2019 when I had the pleasure of seeing this formation at Rock Fest Barcelona projecting a brutal waste of energy of power metal dramatized in an ecclesiastical environment with werewolves as protagonists; and where Falk Maria Schlegel did not stop a second still and Attila’s voice left me totally stunned. And I have to admit even though I regret that this group was unknown to me and I was totally amazed. And it is that this group has a very characteristic sound and its own (like Sabaton) and you can like it or directly hate it. What is this spiel about? Well, they release their new album “Call of the Wild” via Napalm Record for July 16.

The album begins with the song “Faster than the Flame” that begins with ecclesiastical songs with epic touches to then shout the chorus at the top of our lungs, a great song that will make us scream live to shout this hymn. We continue with “Beast of Gevaudan” where the ecclesiastical choirs give that atmospheric touch to another brutal power theme and where the organ continues to maintain that theatrical atmosphere, the first single and video clip of the album.

The next song “Dancing with the Dead” is a song where the choruses combine in an exquisite way to give that point of majesty to the song that forces you to scream, I like guitars on this song. “Varcolac” we have a song where the organ is more present and the drums take center stage in the rhythmic base and the tempos of the song. “Alive or Undead” begins with an ecclesiastical song and the sound of a bell to open the ballad of the album where Attila and Falk go hand in hand at the beginning of the song, I really like the chorus and the theatricalization of the theme with the choirs.

“Blood for Blood (Faoladh)” is a song where the keyboard in bagpipe sound immerses us in an epic theme with happy touches that you imagine singing in a beer-in-hand tavern. “Glaubenskraft” theme with solemn choirs that start the song by shouting the chorus at the top of their lungs, those ecclesiastical background choirs return, a theme where the organ is the protagonist. “Call of the Wild” is offered as a more fluid and direct theme, without choral or orchestral pauses, Power Old School. “Sermons of Swords” is another house brand power song where the choirs scream the chorus and leave no breath. “Undress to Confess” we have a song where the less overloaded keyboards carry the thread of the theme and where Attila’s vocal alternation with the chorus is very cool. “Reverent of Rats” good song to end the album and where I like the duo guitar keyboards.

We are definitely facing another good Powerwolf album, it is worth highlighting the compositional quality and the tremendous virtue of combining choral and orchestral elements without being an overloaded album at any time. It is true that it is a group that has a UNIQUE sound with what it entails, or you like them or you can find people who say that they always sound the same.
