Entrevista – Interview: Gwydion

Gwydion es una banda portuguesa de Folk-Viking metal que inicia su andadura en 1995 y que tras 4 discos de estudio nos presentan su obra homónima “Gwidion”.

Algoderock: Mi primera pregunta es:¿cómo surge el nombre del grupo y el inicio de este periplo como banda de Folk-Viking?

Gwydion: Bueno, Gwydion se deriva de la mitología celta, y cuando éramos más jóvenes (15-16 años) estábamos fascinados con este tema y comenzamos a buscar un nombre que pudiera encajar con la banda. Descubrimos que Gwydion es un mago, un héroe y un embaucador y eso nos gustó, así que el nombre fue consensuado en ese momento y aún perdura hasta ahora. Ya no podemos desvincular nuestra música de este nombre, ¡es una mezcla natural!

Algoderock: Después de 25 años de carrera, ¿están satisfechos con el trabajo realizado en este álbum?

Gwydion: La gente puede esperar 74 minutos de Gwydion. Este disco viaja desde el inicio de la música de la banda hasta un estado más maduro. Hemos puesto todo nuestro esfuerzo en este y creo que esa es la razón por la que es nuestro álbum homónimo, y además es nuestro 25 aniversario como banda, así que fue fácil elegir el nombre de este.

Algoderock: El hecho de que el álbum tenga 14 temas, ¿es algo que lo habíais planteado desde un principio o simplemente ha surgido sobre la marcha?

Gwydion: Comenzó como de costumbre, pusimos todos los riffs que teníamos en mente y comenzamos a unir piezas. Por supuesto que es más complejo que esto, pero entre los ensayos y las sesiones de estudio en la casa de nuestro guitarrista Miguel Kaveirinha (que es el principal compositor de las canciones) tuvimos varios momentos de lluvia de ideas para poner todos estos 74 minutos sonando como queríamos y claro que con la ayuda de hidromiel y cerveza todo sonaba excelente en esos momentos jeje !! ¡Pero cada uno de nosotros contribuyó con ideas para que no se olvidara cada aspecto y detalle!

Algoderock: ¿Cuales son las influencias más reconocibles en este disco?

Gwydion: Todos venimos de diferentes orígenes pero con un interés común: el metal. Todos comenzamos a tocar en nuestros propios proyectos porque nos gustó y fue divertido, y eventualmente creció desde allí hasta convertirse en la banda que tenemos hoy. Siendo seis personas diferentes, nuestras influencias son tan variadas como nuestras propias personalidades. Desde el más negro de los metales hasta el enfoque más folk y tradicional, recorremos todo el camino y no nos conformamos con UNA sola influencia o género. Eso es lo que también hace que el último álbum de la banda sea tan diverso en sonido.

Algoderock: ¿Qué tal ha sido trabajar con colaboradores como  Matt Nilsson o Artur Almeida?

Gwydion: ¡Es increíble cuando trabajamos con los mejores! Todos nuestros invitados son músicos muy talentosos y es un proceso muy simple y natural cuando trabajamos entre amigos. Hemos seleccionado músicos específicos que podrían agregar algo más a cada canción, y cada uno de ellos con su habilidad y toque personal, ¡logramos fácilmente lo que queríamos!

Además de Matts Nilsson de “Brothers of Metal” y Artur Almeida de “Attick Demons”, también trabajamos con Peteris Kvetkovskis de “Skyforger”, Ruben Almeida “Gwydion first vocalist” e Isabel Crisitna de “Dogma”. A cada uno de ellos una vez más, gracias !!

Algoderock ¿Cómo veis la escena del metal en Portugal?

Gwydion: Portugal tiene una fuerte escena de metal underground con muchas buenas bandas que luchan todos los días para marcar la diferencia. Creo que lo más difícil para una banda portuguesa es tocar en los principales festivales europeos y así sucesivamente, a veces sentimos que nuestro país está algo olvidado en esta esquina. Bueno, es nuestro trabajo poner a Portugal en el mapa con respecto a la escena del metal.

Algoderock: EL año que viene, si supuestamente estuviera controlada esta pandemia maldita, ¿tenéis pensado girar en verano?, y en ese caso ¿algo por España?

Gwydion: Esperamos muchos conciertos y giras, algunos de ellos ya planeados. Estamos ansiosos por llevar este álbum al público y en vivo, porque este álbum no solo merece ser escuchado, ¡también merece ser sentido! Hasta que pase esta situación de covid-19, vamos a hacer algunos eventos de transmisión y conciertos de asistencia más pequeños para compensar la falta de eventos en vivo.

Algoderock: Dentro de las portadas de vuestros 5 discos, esta para mi  la más preciosista. ¿A quién debemos su elección?, ¿ Y qué significado queréis transmitir con la misma?

Gwydion: La portada fue realizada por Joe de Arca Design. Fue sugerido por nuestro sello Art Gates Records, ¡y estamos realmente agradecidos de que lo hayan recomendado! Quedamos asombrados con el resultado final, representa tan bien lo que queríamos, que cuando miramos el resultado final, simplemente dijimos “Bueno, esto es todo, ¡esto es Gwydion en una imagen!”

La portada representa la batalla de los árboles, que es una historia tradicional en la que Gwydion anima a los árboles del bosque a luchar como su ejército.

Algoderock: ¿Creéis que con este álbum podéis llegar a abarcar más público para que os conozca?

Gwydion: Hasta ahora el disco ha tenido muy buena acogida. Algunas críticas muy buenas llegaron en el camino y lanzamos tres singles muy diferentes para preparar a nuestros oyentes para la diversidad que tiene el álbum y creemos que la gente entendió la idea. Es un gran álbum, no solo en tiempo de reproducción, sino también en experiencia. ¡Es una celebración de 25 años después de todo!

Con todos esos ingredientes, creemos que podemos dar un paso más en la carrera de la banda, creemos que es hora de mostrar nuestra música a todo el mundo y aumentar nuestra base de fans.

Algoderock: Finalmente quiero daros las gracias por esta entrevista y simplemente dejar unas últimas palabras por si queréis comentar algo más.

Entrevista: Jose Farncisco Torres

Gwydion is a Portuguese Folk-Viking metal band that started in 1995 and after 4 studio albums they present their homonymous work “Gwidion”. First of all, thanks for granting us this interview and congratulations on the album.

Algodeorck: My first question is how did the name of the group come about and the beginning of this journey as a Folk-Viking band?

Gwydion: Well Gwydion derives from the Celtic Mythology, and when we were younger (15-16 years old) we were fascinated by this theme and started to research a name that could fit for the band.

We found that Gwydion is a magician, hero and a trickster and we liked that, so the name was consensual at that time and still perdures until now. We can’t no longer disassociate our sonority to this name, it’s a natural blend!

Algodeorck: After 25 years of career, are you satisfied with the work done on this album?

Gwydion: People can expect 74 minutes of Gwydion. This album travels from the beginning of the sonority of the band till a more mature state. We have put every effort on this one and I think that’s the reason why it’s our self-titled album, and besides on the top of that it’s our 25th anniversary as a band, so it was easy to pick the name for this one.

Algodeorck: The fact that the album has 14 songs, is it something that you had raised from the beginning or did it just come up on the fly?

Gwydion: It started as usual, put the riffs we had in mind altogether and started to join pieces. Of course it’s more complex than this, but between rehearsals and studio sessions at the home of our guitar player Miguel Kaveirinha (which was the main composer of the songs) we had several brainstorming moments to put all this 74 minutes sounding as we wanted, of course with the help of mead and beer everything sounded excellent at those times hehe!! But every one of us contributed with ideas so that every aspect and detail was not forgotten!

Algodeorck: What are the most recognizable influences on this album?

Gwydion: We all come from different backgrounds but with a common interest: metal. We all started to play on our own projects because we liked it and it was fun, and it eventually grew from there to the band we have today. Being six different people, our influences are as varied as our own personalities. From the blackest of metals to the more folk and traditional approach, we go the whole way and don’t settle for just ONE influence or genre. That’s what also makes the band’s last album so diverse in sound.

Algodeorck: How has it been working with collaborators like Matt Nilsson or Artur Almeida? 

Gwydion: It’s awesome when we work with the best! All of our guests are very talented musicians and it’s a very simple and natural process when we work amongst friends.  We have selected specific musicians that could add somehting more to each song, and every single one of them with their skill and personal touch, we easily achieved what we wanted!

Besides Matts Nilsson from “Brothers of Metal” and Artur Almeida from “Attick Demons”, we also worked with Peteris Kvetkovskis from “Skyforger”, Ruben Almeida “Gwydion first vocalist”, and Isabel Crisitna from “Dogma”. To each one of them once again, thanks!!

Algodeorck: How do you see the metal scene in Portugal?

Gwydion: Portugal has a strong underground metal scene with lots of good bands that struggle every day to make a difference. I think the most difficult thing for a Portuguese band is to play on the major European festivals and so on, we felt sometimes that our country is somewhat forgotten on this corner. Well it´s our job to put Portugal on the map regarding the metal scene.

Algodeorck: NEXT year, if this damn pandemic were supposed to be controlled, do you plan to tour in the summer?

Gwydion: We’re expecting lots of concerts and tours, some of them already planned. We’re eager to bring this album to the public and live, because this album does not only deserve to be heard, it also deserves to be felt! Until this covid-19 situation passes, we’re going to make some streaming events and smaller attendance gigs to compensate on the lack of live events.

Algodeorck: Within the covers of your 5 albums, this for me is the most precious. To whom do we owe their choice? And what meaning do you want to convey with it?

Gwydion: The cover was done by Joe from Arca Design. It was sugested from our label Art Gates Records, and we really are grateful that they recommended it!

We were astonished with the final result, it represents so well what we wanted, that when we looked at the final result, we just said “Well this is it, this is Gwydion on a image!!”

The cover represents the battle of Trees which is a traditional story in which Gwydion animates the trees of the forest to fight as his army.

Algodeorck: Do you think that with this album you can reach more public so that they know you?

Gwydion: So far the album has been very well received. Some very good reviews came in along the way and we released three very different singles to prepare our listeners for the diversity the album has and we think people got the idea. It’s a big album, not just in play time, but also in experience. It’s a 25th year celebration after all!

With all of that ingredients we think we can go a step further on the band career, we think it’s time to show our music to all the world and increase our fanbase.

Algodeorck: Finally I want to thank you for this interview and just leave a few last words in case you want to comment on something else.
