Entrevista – Interview: Nachtblut

Nachtblut es una banda alemana de Metal sin concisiones, no les gusta mucho que cataloguen su estilo, acaban de publicar su nuevo disco “Vanitas” con el sello Napalm Records. Hemos charlado con Skoll su batería.

Algoderock: Primero que nada, gracias por concedernos esta entrevista y enhorabuena por el gran trabajo que es “Vanitas”, ¿crees que es vuestro mejor disco ? y ¿ qué aceptación está teniendo por parte de los fans?

Skoll: Primero, ¡gracias! Los comentarios de los fans y los críticos son impresionantes. Parece que “Vanitas” es el álbum favorito hasta ahora de mucha gente. Personalmente creo que es el mejor disco, pero eso es normal. Sería extraño decir que la última obra no es tan buena como la anterior, ¿no? Siempre queremos hacer y dar lo mejor que podamos.

Algoderock: Me sorprende el potente sonido de la batería y todas las orquestaciones, y es el segundo álbum con Benjamin Lawrenz y Chris Harms, ¿cómo ha sido el trabajo de producción?

Skoll: ¡Súper suave, un estudio increíble y un gran equipo! Todos los involucrados hicieron un gran trabajo. Es el mismo estudio y equipo que “Apostasie”, así que sabíamos qué esperar. Podríamos concentrarnos en las canciones y no tuvimos que lidiar con un nuevo entorno o personas. Y como dicen, nunca cambies el equipo ganador.

Algoderock: Tengo una duda, aparentemente para este disco no habéis tenido teclado alguno, Corvin Bahn ya participó en el disco anterior y en este ha compartido sintetizadores y programación con Askeroth, ¿es la primera vez que usas sintetizadores? y ¿ porqué no teclados?

Skoll: No, usamos sintetizadores antes, así como usamos teclados en “Vanitas”. Supongo que es así como está escrito en el dossier de prensa. Con respecto a esto, las cosas realmente no cambiaron con respecto a nuestros álbumes anteriores.

Algoderock: Respecto al disco en general, “Vanitas” es un álbum muy diverso en cuanto a estilos, os etiquetan como Dark Metal, pero yo os veo como una banda de Black Metal melódico con muchas influencias, ¿cómo os definirías?

Skoll: Sinceramente, no me importa cómo se etiquete nuestra música. Algunos dicen Dark Metal, otros lo llaman Melodic Black Metal; al final, esto no tiene ningún efecto en nuestra música. Reconozco que la gente tiende a clasificar las cosas en categorías y lo adopto, diciendo que tocamos “Dark Metal”, pero al final es la música lo que cuenta y no la etiqueta que le pones. Lo más importante es que nosotros y nuestros fans disfrutemos de la música, independientemente del sello.

Algoderock: Otro punto importante son las letras de contenido oscuro, hablando de política, los problemas de la sociedad, la religión, ¿habéis tenido alguna mala crítica o queja al respecto? y ¿vais a seguir escribiendo en vuestra lengua materna?

Skoll: Sí, seguiremos escribiendo letras en alemán. Tal vez, si hubiera una función con alguien que no habla alemán, cambiemos al inglés, pero eso sería excepcional. Por supuesto que hay críticos y los agradecemos. Nuestro objetivo es hacer que las personas piensen y reflexionen sobre su vida y su entorno. Una buena discusión siempre es bienvenida, pero a veces la gente lo confunde con comentarios groseros e irrespetuosos. No nos preocupamos por esas personas.

Algoderock: ¿Cómo os ha afectado la situación que estamos viviendo con el covid ? y ¿cómo ves el futuro de los conciertos y festivales? Imagino que te gustaría volver a Wacken, por ejemplo.

Skoll: Afortunadamente para la grabación y el lanzamiento, COVID-19 no nos afectó en absoluto. Desafortunadamente, los festivales y las giras de 2020 han sido una decepción hasta ahora. El futuro, es difícil de decir. Por supuesto, espero que todo vuelva a la normalidad. De lo contrario, no sé cómo serán las cosas para la escena del metal. ¿Te imaginas un show de metal sentado? Siempre ha sido parte de nuestro espectáculo tener mucho movimiento en y frente al escenario, moshing con fans. Tocar en grandes festivales como Wacken: si se mantiene así, esos festivales no sucederán o tendrán un cierto concepto, pero claro, de nuevo, con menos gente y probablemente con restricciones en cuanto a comportamiento y distancias, etc. Crucemos los dedos, esto no se convertirá en la nueva normalidad.

Algoderock: Tengo entendido que este mes empieza la gira de “Vanitas” en Alemania, ¿sigue adelante?, ¿haríais un concierto Online como otras bandas?

Skoll: Tuvimos que posponer la gira por razones obvias. Como dije, no podemos imaginar un espectáculo sentado, queríamos dar el 100%, ir a lo grande o ir a casa. Lo mismo ocurre con los conciertos en línea / en tiempo real: conozco bandas que prueban ciertas alternativas, nadie tiene la culpa de eso, pero no creo que sea una alternativa adecuada. Quizás para otro evento sí, pero no para un recorrido completo.

Nachtblut is a German Metal band without concisions, they do not like much that they catalog their style, they just released a new album “Vanitas” with Napalm Records. We chatted with Skoll his drumming.

Algoderock: First of all, thanks for granting us this interview and congratulations on the great job that “Vanitas” is, do you think it is your best album?, And what acceptance is it having from the fans?

Skoll: First – thank you! The feedback from fans and critics is awesome. Seems like Vanitas is the favorite album so far for many people. I personally think it’s the best album, but that’s normal. Would be strange to state that the latest opus isn’t as good as the previous one, wouldn’t it?  We always want to make and give the best we can.

Algoderock: I am surprised by the powerful sound of the drums and all the orchestrations, and it is the second album with Benjamin Lawrenz and Chris Harms, how has the production work been?

Skoll: Super smooth, an awesome studio and great team! Everyone involved did a great job. It’s the same studio and team as for Apostasie, so we knew what to expect. We could focus on the songs and didn’t have to deal with a new environment or people. And as they say – never change the winning team.

Algoderock: I have a question, apparently for this album you have not had any keyboard player, Corvin Bahn already participated in the previous album and in this one he has shared synthesizers and programming with Askeroth, is it the first time that you use synthesizers? And why not keyboards?

Skoll: No, we used synthesizers before, as well as we used keyboards on Vanitas. I guess it’s just how it’s written in the booklet. Regarding this, things didn’t really change to our previous albums. 

Algoderock: Regarding the album in general, “Vanitas” is a very diverse album in terms of styles, they label you as Dark Metal, but I see you as a melodic Black Metal band with many influences, how would you define yourself?

Skoll: Honestly I don’t care how our music is labeled. Some say Dark Metal, other call it Melodic Black Metal – in the end this doesn’t have any effect on our music. I acknowledge that people tend to sort thing into categories and I adopt it, saying we play “Dark Metal”, but in the end it’s the music that counts and not the label you put on it. Most important is, that we and our fans enjoy the music, independent from the label. 

Algoderock: Another important point is the dark content lyrics, talking about politics, the problems of society, religion, have you had any bad criticism or complaint about it? And are you going to continue writing in your mother tongue?

Skoll: Yes, we will continue writing in lyrics in German. Maybe, if there will be a feature with someone who doesn’t speak German, we switch to English, but that would be exceptional. Of course there are critics and we appreciate them. Our goal is to make people think and reflect on their lives and their surroundings. A good discussion is always welcome, but sometimes people confuse this with rude and disrespectful comments. We don’t care about those people.  

Algoderock: How has the situation we are living with the covid affected you?, And how do you see the future of concerts and festivals? I imagine you would like to go back to Wacken, for example.

Skoll: Luckily for the recording and release, COVID-19 didn’t affect us at all. Unfortunately regarding festivals and touring 2020 have been a disappointment so far.
The future – it’s hard to say. Of course, I hope that everything will be back to normal again. Otherwise, I don’t know how things will be for the metal scene. Can you imagine a seated metal show? It always has been part of our show to have a lot of movement on and in front of the stage. Stage diving and moshing with fans.
Playing big festivals like Wacken – if it stays like this, those festivals won’t happen or having a certain concept, but then of course again, with fewer people and probably restriction regarding behavior and distances etc.
Let’s cross fingers this won’t become the new normality. 

Algoderock: I understand that this month the tour of “Vanitas” in Germany is starting, are you going ahead? Do you plan to do a live streaming concert?

Skoll: We had to postpone the tour due to the obvious reasons. Like I said, we can’t imagine a seated show, we wanted to give 100% – go big or go home. The same for online/streaming concerts – I know bands trying certain alternatives, none to blame for that, but I don’t think it’s an adequate understudy/alternative. Maybe for another event yes, but not for a complete tour.
