Reseña – Review: Draconian “Under A Godless Veil”

“Under A Godless Veil” es el título del séptimo álbum de los suecos Draconian, y el segundo consecutivo con la vocalista de origen sudafricano Heike Langhans (Light Field Reverie), perfecta compañera angelical para los guturales de Anders Jacobsson, y es que uno de los puntos fuertes de este trabajo, puesto a la venta el pasado 30 de octubre a través de Napalm Records, es el dueto que forman esta pareja vocal, y otro punto considerable es la producción, minuciosa y poderosa, a cargo del guitarrista y compositor del grupo, Johan Ericsson.

Sólo con la portada de Natalia Drepina (Morokh, Nidra, Phidion) ya se puede vislumbrar un contenido infausto y lúgubre, y así es, tanto lírica como musicalmente. Para quien no conozca a Draconian decir que practican un estilo Doom/Gothic Metal atmosférico con algún toque death, muy similar a lo que hace últimamente My Dying Bride, y es lo que nos vamos a encontrar en este “Under A Godless Veil”, pero sobre todo mucho Doom Metal atmosférico.

El primer tema “Sorrow of Sophia”, y el último, “Ascend Into Darkness”, son mis preferidos, y qué mejor forma de empezar un disco que cerrarlo con las mismas sensaciones. El primero, te atrapa con unas melodías lentas, melancólicas y tenebrosas, acompañadas por la suave voz de Heike Langhans, esta tiene un registro muy similar al de Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), de repente la base rítmica se vuelve más intensa, los riffs más pesados, los gruñidos de Anders Jacobsson irrumpen con fuerza, y hasta hay lugar para unos arreglos de cuerda que le dan un aire sinfónico. Un temazo complejo donde los haya. El último, tiene la misma estructura y una duración de casi nueve minutos, pero hay algo más de ritmo, las guitarras y la batería suenan más potentes, y una parte melódica muy interesante.

Entre medias, tenemos una serie de temas muy buenos y de una gran calidad, de los cuales destacaría: “The Sacrificial Flame”, doom puro y duro, y el que más me recuerda a My Dying Bride. “The Sethian” es el tema más rápido y con más influencias death de todo el disco, aunque sigue la misma línea de melodías suaves y melancólicas, y donde Daniel Arvidsson, guitarra rítmica, colabora con voces guturales. De “Claw Marks On The Throne” me quedo con el gran solo de guitarra. “Moon Over Sabaoth”, tiene una intro espectacular, unas líneas de bajo y batería contundentes, unos acordes melódicos, y está vez la voz de Heike se escucha de fondo y la gutural de Anders en primer plano, “We stand tall, for no more shall our souls rattle the chains of Saklas and the moon over Sabaoth…”, esa parte del estribillo es memorable. Total, que bien podría ser otro de mis temas favoritos, y es que a estas alturas del disco me doy cuenta de que estos suecos han conseguido meterme de lleno en su sombrío mundo.

Tampoco quiero olvidarme de “Burial Fields” y “Night Visitor”, dos temas poco habituales en la historia de Draconian por su corta duración, menos de cinco minutos, y por ser lo más cercano a una balada dentro del estilo doom, donde bajan las revoluciones hasta una cierta calma y el protagonismo se lo lleva la dulce voz de Heike Langhans.

Conclusión, Draconian han vuelto a facturar otro gran disco, y ya van siete, te podrá gustar más o menos su estilo, pero lo que es indudable es que son unos excelentes músicos y “Under A Godless Veil” lo considero como uno de los mejores álbumes de Doom Metal de los últimos años.

“Under A Godless Veil” is the title of the seventh album by the Swedes Draconian, and the second in a row with South African-born vocalist Heike Langhans (Light Field Reverie), the perfect angelic companion for Anders Jacobsson‘s gutturals, and is that one of the strengths of this work, released on October 30 through Napalm Records, is the duet that this vocal couple form, and another considerable point is the production, meticulous and powerful, by the guitarist and composer of the group, Johan Ericsson.

Only with the cover of Natalia Drepina (Morokh, Nidra, Phidion) you can already glimpse an unfortunate and gloomy content, and that’s how it is, both lyrically and musically. For those who do not know Draconian say that they practice an atmospheric Doom / Gothic Metal style with a touch of death, very similar to what My Dying Bride does lately, and that is what we are going to find in this “Under A Godless Veil”, but mostly a lot of atmospheric Doom Metal.

The first song “Sorrow of Sophia”, and the last one, “Ascend Into Darkness”, are my favorites, and what better way to start an album than to close it with the same feelings. The first one catches you with slow, melancholic and dark melodies, accompanied by the soft voice of Heike Langhans, this has a register very similar to that of Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), suddenly the rhythmic base becomes more intense, the heavier riffs, Anders Jacobsson‘s growls burst out loud, and there’s even room for string arrangements that give it a symphonic air. A complex song where they exist. The last one has the same structure and lasts for almost nine minutes, but there is a bit more rhythm, the guitars and drums sound more powerful, and a very interesting melodic part.

In between, we have a series of topics very good and of a high quality, of which I would highlight: “The Sacrificial Flame”, pure and hard doom, and the one that most reminds me of My Dying Bride. “The Sethian” is the fastest track and with more death influences on the entire album, although it follows the same line of soft and melancholic melodies, and where Daniel Arvidsson, rhythm guitar, collaborates with guttural voices. From “Claw Marks On The Throne” I prefer the great guitar solo. “Moon Over Sabaoth” has a spectacular intro, strong bass lines and drums, melodic chords, and this time Heike’s voice is heard in the background and Anders’s guttural in the foreground, “We stand tall, for no more shall our souls rattle the chains of Saklas and the moon over Sabaoth… “, that part of the chorus is memorable. Anyway, it could well be another of my favorite songs, and it is that at this point in the album I realize that these Swedes have managed to get me fully into their shady world.

Nor do I want to forget “Burial Fields” and “Night Visitor”, two unusual songs in the history of Draconian for their short duration, less than five minutes, and for being the closest thing to a ballad in the doom style, where the revolutions until a certain calm and the protagonism is taken by the sweet voice of Heike Langhans.

Conclusion, Draconian have returned to bill another great album, and there are already seven, you may like their style more or less, but what is undoubted is that they are excellent musicians and “Under A Godless Veil” I consider it as one of the best Doom Metal albums of recent years.
