“Neverending Fight” suena ochentera, alegre, dinámica, melódica y a Firewind.

Lost Horizon’s “A Flame To The Ground Beneath” is one of my favorite albums and is considered one of the best albums in the history of Power Metal. And you will say, what does this have to do with the Greek Warrior Path? As it turns out, this band has recruited, for their second album, “The Mad King”, the very Daniel Heiman, singer of that band that since 2004 continues in a period of inactivity. So personally, he really wanted to hear this album. Not only for this fact but also because Bob Katsionis repeats, the one who was keyboardist and guitarist for Firewind, among other bands, and who in Warrior Path is also in charge of playing bass and production.
The rest of the group is made up of Andreas Sinanoglou, leader, founder and guitarist (rhythmic and acoustic) and Dave Rundle, drums. As for other technical details referred to “The Mad King”, say that it was recorded at the Sound Symmetry Studio, Athens and mastered by Nasos Nomikos at VU Productions Studio, Piraeus. For the cover they once again have the design of Dimitar Nikolov (Ancillotti, Braveride, Ilium, Metal Inquisitor, etc.) and the Symmetric Records label has been in charge of distribution since March 5.
The first song is titled “It Has Begun” and is an instrumental of almost three minutes unusual because it goes beyond the typical conventional intro that you can imagine. It begins with a quiet passage of acoustic guitar, and some symphonic elements in the background, to go up to a more crash rhythm, Manowar style, unleashing in clean and fast guitar melodies.
After the promising start is followed by the homonymous “The Mad King”, which continues in the wake of the previous one, as far as rhythm is concerned, although I would say that the guitars sound sharper and the drums more powerful. But the turning point comes with Daniel Heiman yelling it out of him in a high-pitched way. I am very happy to see that his voice has not lost its faculties.
The beginning of “His Wrath Will Fall” is epic and somewhat dark but quickly the rhythm changes and the bent guitars appear. This is a joy and sonic delight for Bob Katsionis fans.
“Beast Of Hate” is a melodic power metal track, reminiscent of Gamma Ray, with good picks and guitar solo.
“Don’t Fear The Unknown” is a great song, no matter where you look at it, because it has memorable moments: slow, semi-acoustic, intense, melodic, powerful and very fast. Few times seven minutes and twenty seconds will go so fast.
At this point in the album it is inevitable for me to recall Heiman’s time with Lost Horizon and it also happens to me in “Savage Tribe”, but not because of the loud horn at the beginning but because of how it goes up and down tones throughout the song. Sounds of rain and storm followed by a narrative voice initiate “Avenger”. A half time that has a classic Dio rhythm, where Heiman is excellent again.
“Out From The Shadows” oozes Manowar on all four sides, also because of the choreable chorus. But the one who stands out is Mr. Katsionis and his catchy, melodic riffs. “Neverending Fight” sounds eighties, happy, dynamic, melodic and Firewind.
The closing is for “Last Tale”. A marvel of theme, complex, epic and the closest thing to a ballad, without being it in its entirety. That is to say, what they have been doing throughout the album, all of a sudden they surprise you with powerful rhythm changes and sharp, melodic and fast guitars.
Conclusion, if you expect to find yourself in “The Mad King” a typical power metal album, this is not the case. It is closer to the style of 80s heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden or epics like Manowar, Warlock, Heavens Gate or Scanner. In any case, Warrior Path makes a leap in quality with respect to their self-titled album and the choice of Daniel Heiman as the vocalist has been a success. However, if I had to put a problem, some songs sin to have the same compositional structure and that can be monotonous or repetitive. Still, it seems like a great album to me.
