If one were to look up the exact word in the dictionary to define the North American Weezer, that would be “Unpredictable” and that is that Cuomo and his people are capable of both publishing works as remarkable as “Blue Album” 27 years ago (as time passes gentlemen …) or celebrate the two decades of the “Green Album” in a few months and then in this decade not having released a single album that is worth listening to from beginning to end and still have fans waiting for the next one step they take.
Unfortunately, with the pandemic, two events had to be postponed that seemed to return the guitarist spirit to the group, an album like “Van Weezer”, where, as you could guess from the title, it was going to be an album designed for stadium rock, with guitars everywhere and choreable choruses galore and curiously the tour that would serve as a presentation was going to be carried out neither more nor less than with Fall Out Boy and Green Day, in what could be the 2021 version of the “Pop Disaster Tour” (that mythical poster that Green Day shared with Blink-182, Jimmy Eat World and Saves The Day), but of course the pandemic arrived and spoiled everything and everyone.
But hey, this long period of inactivity regarding concerts and other events related to promotional tours, served Weezer to get to work on another album and continue to unleash his creativity.
Cuomo had already anticipated that “Ok Human” was going to be a more intimate album and at least he has not lied about it, since you will not see a single electric guitar throughout the album, there is a lot of orchestral arrangement and a lot of piano presence, Of course, one hears this and thinks two things: It may sound good and I have a greater uncertainty than Cuomo’s own ego, which is saying.
The funny thing is that having listened to the album, we can affirm that the greatness that it promised regarding the instruments is very present, those arrangements made in Abbey Road are very good and are a note in favor … But really the album is passed in a Sigh and it is the shortest they have recorded in 20 years since the release of the mythical and beautiful “Green Album” in 2001.
Luckily for the listener it is quite pleasant and refreshing to hear such musically interesting pieces as “Aloo Gobi”, “Grapes Of Wrath”, “Here Comes The Rain” (with a nod to Elvis Presley included) or “Bird With A Broken Wing “(with a Beatlelian atmosphere flying over the song), among others and at no time does it make you monotonous or simply indifferent as if it happened with the” White Album “(from where little can be scratched) or the” Teal Album “(Light Blue if you will and candidate for the worst album of the band’s career), here at least there is enjoyable and very interesting material.
Well, in summary we are surely facing the best Weezer album in a decade but that is not enough for it to be remembered when the band decides to retire or perhaps it can be seen as a cult album in the distant future, time I will say but for now I would tell you that if you like Weezer but you had put them aside a bit, go back to get them back because this album deserves it and now we are left with the uncertainty of how “Van Weezer” will sound in full when spring arrives, At the moment of the two albums that we will have from the band this 2021, this is a success but not a target, we will see the next one.
