“Cause with you at my side
I will never be lost
As my apathy is death
Our apathy is death
But with you at my side
I will always be lost”

Coinciding with the group’s tenth anniversary, the Austrians Harakiri For The Sky return with their highly anticipated fifth album that comes after three years since their masterful “Arson” (2018) to continue proving that they are not just another band, but a band that there is only one and the rest are mere companions.
As is usual in this band, the album has to be digested little by little and in this case perhaps it is necessary to take a breath and sit quietly and without haste to face this new work. broken, mental illness, loss and nostalgia, all under the intensity and dark sound that is usual in HFTS.
If you are looking for a light album or that enters the first, you can still stop reading here and go to other groups, not that they are less than HFTS but this band is another move and not suitable for all listeners.
Above we can find several surprises such as the appearances of Neige de Alcest, the voice of Gaera in “Silver Needle – The Golden Dawn” and a sublime version of “Song To Say Goodbye” by Placebo that could perfectly pass for an original theme if not We knew the original by Brian Molko and his crew, but what they did with this classic British alternative rock song from the early 00’s is outrageous.
When I said that these guys are different, notice that the album opens with the first single from the album and is neither more nor less than the bombshell “I, Pallbearer” that lasts a whopping 7 minutes and 2 seconds, if friends HFTS presents their new work with a fairly long song but to which you can not put a single hit and on top it will be one of the songs of 2021 by far.
Be careful with a clean start because far from remaining like this, the other instruments immediately go through their act of pressence and give it the strength and intensity that make it an absolute hit.
In addition, the lyrics are very crude dealing with issues such as bipolarity, depression and melancholy and it is like a constant battle against these serious problems that are very present in society and with which it is not easy to live.
As you can see, the album already starts strong and does not disappoint at all.
The next cut has the collaboration of Neige (Alcest) and is the overwhelming and devastating “Sing For The Damage We’ve Done”, where issues such as distancing and the impossibility of living with the other person are addressed, often due to the simple act of trying to save a ship that is practically sunk both parties continue to damage and suffer instead of separating and moving on.
Look at these phrase from the song:
“Cause with you at my side
I will never be lost
As my apathy is death
Our apathy is death
But with you at my side
I will always be lost”
Simply devastating and painful as hell.
Then comes the binomial “Us Against December Skies” (slow, gray, atmospheric, dense) and “I’m All About The Dusk” (much darker and closer to doom, but just as remarkable), which shows us both faces of the band and knocks you out right after finishing both songs.
A little (just a little) more “accessible” is “Three Empty Words” that could have fit on their previous album and that oxygenates the album with respect to the two previous ones that were very powerful and quite dark, but not confuse us … no it’s a “single” to listen to just like that, it just fits in better than its two predecessors.
It is a quite cañero song and that is complemented with exquisite melodies that would leave many colleagues in the profession in their pants.
The whole album could be highlighted practically but the truth is that it is a work to be enjoyed over a slow fire introducing you little by little into the album, its post black metal with depressive overtones is not something to have fun or anything, it is to listen and analyze when you recover the breath after these 10 crushing cuts.
Well in fairness, there are nine but the masterful version of “Song To Say Goodbye” by Placebo, as we have said, seems to be its own song and is one of the best covers that have been done in recent years.
There is not much more to add, Harakiri For The Sky have done it again, creating a practically masterpiece that has a lot of merit after the great album that was “Arson”, but this one goes a step further if possible and makes him A serious candidate for album of the year and one of the best of the decade, it is no longer recommended for fans of the group and post black, but for any lover of dense and dark music it is a must listen.
